White sesame seeds are small light colored seeds obtained from the Sesamum indicum plant and are widely traded as an agricultural food commodity. They are valued for their mild nutty flavor, natural oil content, protein, fiber, and versatile culinary applications. They are commonly supplied for wholesale food processing, baking, confectionery, cooking, and oil production.
Common types include natural white sesame seeds, hulled white sesame seeds, unhulled white sesame seeds, cleaned sesame seeds, machine sorted sesame seeds, and premium food grade sesame seeds. Products may also be classified according to seed size, color, purity, moisture, oil content, and processing method. Hulled seeds have the outer seed coat removed, while natural seeds retain the outer skin.
White sesame is cultivated in warm agricultural regions across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Major producing countries include India, Sudan, Myanmar, Tanzania, Nigeria, China, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Mexico, and Brazil. Production and quality can vary according to seed variety, climate, soil conditions, irrigation, harvesting methods, and post harvest handling.
Examples of major companies involved in sesame trading, agricultural processing, and food ingredients include Olam Agri, ADM, Cargill, Louis Dreyfus Company, and AGT Food and Ingredients. Sesame is also supplied by specialized agricultural exporters, cleaning facilities, oilseed processors, and food ingredient companies.
Typical specifications include purity, moisture, oil content, seed color, foreign matter, damaged seeds, admixture, and microbiological quality. Commercial white sesame seeds commonly have purity levels of 98 to 99 percent or higher, with moisture generally around 5 to 7 percent. Oil content can commonly range from approximately 45 to 55 percent depending on variety and growing conditions. Buyers may also specify seed count, color uniformity, pesticide residues, aflatoxin, salmonella, and other food safety parameters.
White sesame seeds are commonly packed in polypropylene bags, woven bags with inner liners, kraft paper bags, vacuum bags, or flexible intermediate bulk containers. Common wholesale packaging includes 25 kg and 50 kg bags, while larger commercial quantities may be supplied in bulk. Packaging should protect the seeds from moisture, insects, contamination, strong odors, and excessive heat during storage and transportation.
Transportation is generally carried out by road, rail, sea, or multimodal freight depending on origin, quantity, and destination. Sesame seeds should be stored in clean, dry, cool, and well ventilated conditions. They are widely used in bakery products, bread, buns, crackers, confectionery, tahini, sesame oil, sauces, snacks, cereals, spice blends, salads, and prepared foods. Wholesale buyers generally specify whether the seeds are hulled or natural, as well as purity, moisture, oil content, seed size, cleaning method, packaging, crop year, origin, certificates, and food safety requirements.
