Ragi millet is a nutritious cereal grain widely cultivated and traded in agricultural and food markets. Also known as finger millet, it is valued for its high dietary fiber, calcium, iron, plant protein, and naturally gluten free characteristics. Ragi is commonly used in flour, porridge, bakery products, breakfast cereals, snacks, beverages, infant foods, and traditional dishes.
Commercial ragi millet is available in different grades and processing forms according to buyer requirements. Common categories include whole ragi grain, cleaned ragi, polished ragi, ragi flour, organic ragi, malted ragi, and export grade finger millet. Buyers select different products for food processing, retail distribution, bakery production, nutritional products, or wholesale trade. Uniform grains, natural color, low moisture, high purity, and minimal foreign matter are important quality characteristics.
Ragi is primarily cultivated in warm and semi arid regions and is known for its ability to grow under relatively dry conditions. Major producing countries include India, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nepal, and Tanzania, with India being one of the largest producers. Modern agricultural practices, harvesting, drying, cleaning, grading, and milling technologies help maintain consistent quality for domestic and international markets.
Standard commercial specifications generally include moisture content around 12 percent maximum, high purity, and controlled levels of damaged, broken, or discolored grains according to the selected grade. High quality ragi millet should have a clean appearance, uniform reddish brown to dark brown color, characteristic aroma, and be free from insects, mold, stones, excessive dust, foreign matter, and abnormal odors. Commercial specifications may also define grain size, foreign matter, moisture, microbial limits, pesticide residues, and compliance with applicable food safety standards.
Ragi millet is commonly packed in woven polypropylene bags, kraft paper bags, laminated food grade sacks, vacuum packaging, or customized retail packs. Standard bulk packaging sizes include 25 kg and 50 kg bags, while smaller packages are used for consumer products and specialty food markets. International shipments are transported in clean, dry containers protected from moisture, pests, and contamination.
