SEO for B2B e-commerce increases keyword rankings and organic search engine traffic for digital visibility. A successful strategy puts an e-commerce website before those looking to engage with the provided services or products.

For the average B2B e-commerce company, paid search is the largest marketing channel because 68% of website traffic starts from a search query. In 2022, the amount spent on paid advertising hit $441 billion globally.

However, B2B e-commerce organizations are increasingly becoming more frugal with budget allocation in a world of economic uncertainty. Now, they're embracing a “free” marketing strategy like SEO that has proven to deliver high-quality results over time.

Importance of SEO for B2B e-commerce?

Many B2B e-commerce companies don't benefit from SEO due to a lack of knowledge. But when you get down to it, SEO involves creating a website that delivers what your potential clients want.

The SEO for B2B E-commerce Roadmap to Success

With accurate SEO strategies, B2B e-commerce companies can generate more leads, increase brand visibility, and, ultimately, grow their business. Achieving SEO success requires a strategic approach, and starting with a well-crafted plan is advisable.

Here are essential steps for e-commerce companies to optimize content for search engines, achieve higher rankings, and drive more targeted traffic to product pages. Whether new to SEO or looking to improve efforts for desired returns, these steps are your roadmap to success.

Technical SEO and structured architecture

High-performing B2B e-commerce SEO usually starts with a robust site architecture. Your plan should address website technical elements like XML sitemap files, site structure, and robots.txt files as they impact how search engines crawl and index the content.

Need to learn how to check and monitor your technical SEO?

Run a Core Web Vitals report.

A Core Web Vitals report measures URL performance grouped by status (Good, Need improvement, Poor). Further, it displays URL groups (groups of similar web pages) and metric types (CLS, INP, and LCP). Other metrics to find in this report include the following:

Perceived load speed
Load responsiveness
Runtime responsiveness
Visual stability
Smoothness

The information is essential to your technical SEO optimization. It’s based on what Google identifies as quality metrics or signals and can help quantify a web store’s perceived performance.

Check for 404s

A 404 error displays if a user tries to access a non-existent page. Such an error message indicates a poor user experience and can affect the search engine ranking of your website.

Audit your sitemap

A sitemap is a file listing all pages on your website. It helps search engines understand its structure, and performing an audit improves your SEO.

Research and Analyze your Audience and Competitors

After fixing your technical checklist, it's time for research and analysis. It involves evaluating competitors, understanding the target audience, and identifying keywords that'll lead them to the web page.

Understanding your target audience

To thoroughly understand your target audience, build “buyer personas.” They're the characteristics of your target buyers, so ask the following questions:

What is their job title or company role?
What are their age ranges, how do they identify?
What industry do they work in?
How big is their department? Their company?
How many decision-makers are in their company? Are they the sole purchaser of their company?

After establishing demographics, move into behavior and motivation. Questions to ask include:

Why is your target audience seeking your solution?
What pain points can your products solve?
How does the target audience interact with your brand?
How much information do they need to make purchasing decisions?

Answers to these questions give you an excellent start to keyword research.

Identifying Relevant Keywords and Phrases

Knowing the target audience, what they need, and how they discuss your products or services helps you develop effective keywords. To better understand what your prospects are searching for, engage them in conversations through social channels like Twitter and Facebook.

Expand your list of queries.

Craft a category of keywords and build your list in many directions. Use keyword planning and SEO tools such as:

Google Search Console
SEMRush
Google Ads Keyword Planner
Ahrefs
Spyfu
Wordstream

Conduct competitor analysis

After building your keyword research foundation, check the words your competitors rank for and add to them. Then, identify opportunities to leverage them with your content.

Using target keywords to outrank your competitors increases brand visibility. So, conduct a basic search on competitors' websites using SEO tools like SEMRush or Ahrefs.

Content strategy and on-page SEO

Focus on the content on your website after creating a keyword list. One of the successful ways to create SEO content is through blog posts. Start by selecting keywords for which your website isn't ranking and write. Blog posts ranking on search engines can take time, so set a reminder to evaluate performances.

Optimize existing content

Next for B2B e-commerce companies is on-page optimization. It involves optimizing website elements such as meta descriptions, URLs, and title tags. They're visible to search engines and help your product pages rank better.

Illustrate products with quality images and include relevant search terms, descriptions, and title tags.
Add a FAQ section
Leverage customer reviews and testimonials
Minimize page load times

URL structure

URLs are critical to on-page optimization. B2B e-commerce companies should aim for clear, concise URLs with the main keyword. Avoid special characters or numbers and use descriptive URLs that demonstrate page content.

Meta tags optimization

Meta tags contain the meta descriptions and title tags. They're the snippets of text that appear when a user searches for your content to provide an overview. It makes a significant difference for your site's click-through rate.

Off-page SEO and optimizations

Off-page SEO entails relevance and building authority. If what you’re all about indicates relevance, votes will follow before authority passes to you from other websites via links.

There are two main methods to ensure you’re on the right path with off-page optimization:

Link building strategies
Social media

Link building strategies

Backlinking is a vital SEO component that refers to acquiring links from other sources to your website. Search engines recognize these links as a vote of confidence that can bring relevant traffic to your website and referrals for business growth.

Focus on high-authority websites in your industry and use their links to develop your strategy. Focus on quality blogs that evaluate your product positively. Use guest posts on industry publications and get your site listed on pages to purchase your products.

Social media

Many B2B e-commerce companies may think of something other than social media when building SEO, but it's essential to increase visibility. Sharing content on social platforms and encouraging followership engagement can strengthen SEO by driving traffic to your website.

Track your progress

Another rewarding aspect of B2B e-commerce SEO is that it's genuinely measurable. You can schedule monthly or quarterly audits to track your progress, and here are the metrics to achieve success:

Organic Search Traffic: It measures the number of website visitors through SERPs.

Keyword Rankings: It determines how your content performs against the page's targeted keywords and reveals alternate ranking keyword opportunities.

Bounce Rate: It's a good indicator of content quality. It identifies how long a visitor stays on your website and your content's relevance.

Conversion Rate: It evaluates the percentage of visitors that take action on your site and how SEO converts visitors.

Furthermore, track your B2B e-commerce key performance index (KPIs) with SEMRush, Google Analytics, or Ahrefs.

Conclusion

SEO for B2B e-commerce is complex, but following these five-step plans is your success roadmap. However, there are common mistakes organizations make that affect their strategy. For example, if a business operates in a particular region, forgetting localized keywords can result in missed opportunities to target the audience. Furthermore, SEO requires patience, but organizations may try to accelerate results, leading to penalties. Link schemes, keyword stuffing, and hidden text can negatively impact your SEO strategy health.
