Xylitol, also known as pentapentol, is a kind of sugar alcohol. It is the product of xylitol metabolism and is a five-carbon sugar alcohol that can be used as a substitute for sucrose. Xylitol is mainly produced in China, widely exists in various plants like birch, raspberry, corn and other plants. Xylitol is mainly obtained by hydrogenation reduction of xylose. Xylitol is as sweet as sucrose but has only 60% of the calories.
