Twisted tube is a type of enhanced heat transfer tube first introduced by Swedish Alards Company and later improved by the USA’s Koch Heat Transfer Company, LP. Structure and manufacture: The twisted tube has an oval cross-section, and heat exchangers can use mixed bundles of twisted and bare tubes or a pure twisted tube bundle. The manufacturing process involves partial pressure and distortion. The tube’s cross-section is nearly elliptical, with the long-to-short axis ratio designed according to the flow velocity in the tube and shell passes. When the flow rate in the tube pass is low, the long-to-short axis ratio is increased, or the flow surface is reduced to increase the flow rate. Enhanced heat transfer principles: The unique structure induces spiral motion in both tube and shell passes simultaneously, enhancing turbulent intensity. The heat transfer coefficient of a twisted tube is 40% higher than a normal tube, while the pressure drop remains almost the same. Advantages: Lower pressure drop, no baffle plate needed, higher heat transfer efficiency, increased turbulence for better mixing, and reduced deposition with no blind zones in the shell. Applications: Twisted tubes have been widely developed and improved and are now reliable for almost all shell and tube heat exchangers. Over 1000 twisted tube heat exchangers have been used since 1984 in gas-gas, liquid-liquid, and liquid-gas heat transfer processes across chemical, petroleum, food, papermaking, electric power, metallurgy, mining, and urban heating industries.
