The Fluke 1625-2 Ground Tester allows for clamp only ground resistance measurements without the need for auxiliary rods. Two clamps are placed around the grounding rod and connected to the tester - one clamp induces a known fixed voltage while the other measures the resulting current. The tester then automatically calculates the resistance of the grounding rod. This method works when the building or structure has an existing grounding system, which most do. For single path to ground, as in many residential applications, the clamp only method may be unreliable, and the traditional fall-of-potential test is recommended. Using the clamp only method, there is no need to disconnect the grounding rod, so the existing grounding system remains undisturbed. It saves time by eliminating the need to set up auxiliary rods for each measurement and allows testing in locations previously difficult to access, such as inside buildings, high voltage towers, or areas with no direct soil contact.
