Jet fuel is a flammable, straw-colored liquid used in turbine-powered aircraft. It's primarily derived from crude oil, but can also come from kerogen, an organic material found in shale. Appearance: Clear to straw-colored and smells like kerosene. Production: Comes from crude oil in refineries. Involves desalting, distillation, and processing to remove unwanted components. Uses: Used in commercial and military aircraft Jet A and Jet A-1 are the most common fuels for commercial aviation Jet B is used in cold weather because of its low freezing point Safety features: Has a higher flashpoint than gasoline, which reduces the risk of fire Other types of jet fuel: JP-5, JP-8, TS-1, and AVGAS 100LL and AVGAS 100. Toxicity: Some jet fuels contain tetraethyl lead, which is toxic to humans if inhaled or absorbed into the bloodstream.
